Since the early days of humanity, people have created maps. At the beginning very simple, and later more and more complex. A map is a simplified depiction of a space which highlights relations between components (objects, regions) of that space. Most usually a map is a two-dimensional, geometrically accurate representation of a three-dimensional space; e.g., a geographical map. More generally, maps can be devised to represent any local property of the world or part of it, or any other space, such as the brain. Map-making dates back to the Stone Age and appears to predate written language by several millennia. One of the oldest surviving maps is painted on a wall of the Catal Huyuk settlement in south-central Anatolia (now Turkey); it dates from about 6200 BC. One who makes maps professionally or privately is called a cartographer.
Many but not all maps are drawn to a scale, allowing the reader to infer the actual sizes of, and distances between, depicted objects. A larger scale shows more detail, thus requiring a larger map to show the same area. For example, maps designed for the hiker are often scaled at the ratio 1:24,000, meaning that 1 of any unit of measurement on the map corresponds to 24,000 of that same unit in reality; while maps designed for the motorist are often scaled at 1:250,000. Maps which use some quality other than physical area to determine relative size are called cartograms. A famous example of a map without scale is the London Underground map, which best fulfils its purpose by being less physically accurate and more visually communicative to the hurried glance of the commuter. This is not a cartogram (since there is no consistent measure of distance) but a topological map that also depicts approximate bearings. The simple maps shown on some directional road signs are further examples of this kind.
But it is not these historical buildings that attract tourists to Kerala. It is the beauty of its nature, which is blessed both with mountain ranges and forests on the east and the Arabian sea and backwaters on the West. A travel map? Why? There are so many places in Kerala to be seen, so unless you are planning to stay here for a long time you need to plan your holidays properly. There is every chance that you miss one beautiful tourist attraction while having a hasty trip from one place to another. Just by taking five minutes to look at your Kerala Map, you can avoid all this and have a beautiful experience of lifetime. Why has a hasty trip when you can avoid it? This is a common problem faced by many tourists. They visit Kerala for a short holiday and most time travel from one end to another missing the soothing experience of Kerala, the reason why they chose to come here. Kerala is a place to relax your mind. It is not a place where you can find the rush of a metro, large shopping malls and theme parks, but a place where you live in harmony with nature. There are places where you need to stay longer and places where you can just skim through. For example you can enjoy the backwaters only if you stay there for a day on a houseboat. But in Trivandrum which houses most of the palaces of old Kings of Kerala, it may take only one day to visit them all. So when you plan your holiday it is better to plan it with the help of a travel map.
There are some maps that combine all the above mentioned principles or use a compromise between them to depict the world and countries. For example, Robinson projection that showed the entire world at a glance can be said to be a compromise between the equal-area and conformal map projection. The objective behind its creation was to show the entire globe as a flat image. However, the Robinson projection was replaced later by the more modified version called the Winkel tripel projection, which is considered to be a blend of the azimuthal Aitoff projection and the equirectangular projection. At present, digital maps use either one or more than one of these aforesaid map projection types to create interactive maps that not only show the data in a much reliable way but also let the users utilize the maps to get additional information based on add-on clickable icons, pushpins, tool tip or mouse over info boxes etc. If you still havent enjoyed the use of digital flash maps with several user friendly, interactive features, its time to shift from the traditional paper maps to see the sales graphs soar.
Internal cross links between lower level keywords are less common in mind maps and concept maps than they are in association maps, with the branching tree structure tending to take precedence. With concept and mind maps, the relationship of each word to the overarching theme remains paramount. In association maps, however, the link becomes the key, and, as stated, the process of deciding which type of link joins keywords together is a valuable part of ascertaining correct understanding. If you cant link two keywords effectively, you havent understood how they are related to one another! This pairing and linking process allows a jigsaw like approach to the development of the knowledge map, and enables a student always to be working from a point of understanding. Most interestingly, when used to develop a map for a new topic where one is not an expert, it is possible to identify the high level terms which will take precendence at the top of a concept map once an association map has been developed. This is because they are the ones with the most linkages. Development of an association map therefore gives a useful mechanism for allowing students to take on the expert role and develop their own concept maps, even when they are not fully confident in a subject. Drawing any of the three types of maps involves much more active learning than just using ready produced ones in my experience so this is a definite bonus. In summary, all mapping techniques provide a powerful method for organising key ideas within a topic or sub-topic. Mind mapping allows colourful creativity, concept mapping provides the confidence of professional correctness, and association mapping always lets you get started somewhere, but I have a sneaky suspicion, that the real power of visual mapping is the process your brain goes through when you develop those non-verbal links for yourself, so get a pencil and get started!
Though a globe model of the earth is the most common version of the earths surface, it would often create a lot of confusions to combine the political and physical maps together. Thats why maps are created for different purposes, which use map projection to depict the earths surface on a plane using a wide variety of scales. Digital maps also use map projections to present data on a computer screen. Different maps use different map projections based on what purpose the map will serve and the scale thats suitable for the purpose. For example, a type of map projection may show severe distortions while mapping the whole country, but may serve as an excellent choice for a countys detailed map that aims to cover a large area. The type of map projections also influences some of the design elements of a map. While some are suitable for small regions, some other projections are good for mapping areas with a huge north-south or east-west extent, or to cover all countries of the world.
