Plat Maps A plat map is a plan of an area which shows the legal boundaries and dimensions of each parcel of land. These maps can usually be found at your local city or county government center. Check for the property owners of your parcel of land on each of the plat maps you locate. Street Maps These maps can help identify when the street you are researching was created. It is not uncommon to find that the street name has changed over time. Check with your local municipality for the existence of old street maps. Many city directories actually contain a street map that provides details on the streets covered by the directory. Comparing these maps with current maps can help to pinpoint street names that have been changed. Libraries typically have copies of city directories at their facilities.

There are other options worth knowing about: firstly the Active Maps which come in both Landranger and Explorer ranges and have a laminated, waterproof cover to protect your map from the rain and elements when out and about; secondly there are the custom-made maps which allow you to choose where the centre of your map will be. These are particularly handy if the route you want to follow will require buying 2 or more maps or you want maps of the countryside surrounding one central point on all sides e.g. the area around a campsite or accommodation or even your house! Both types of map are more expensive than basic OS Explore and OS Landranger maps. Check your whole walk area is covered: Select the type of map you require and then check on the map detail that your whole route is covered. The last thing you want is to realise that half your intended route is missing when you set off for your walk! If necessary you will need to get additional maps for adjoining areas. Each map has a number in the top right hand corner of the cover which along with the name is the reference you will need to select the correct map to purchase.
Some libraries carry the Sanborn maps on microfilm. Look up your property on the various maps and check for any existing house and outbuildings, such as a garage, shed or barn. The house number will be located at the front edge of the lot. Make note of the number as it was not unusual for the house number, or even street name, to change over the years. If you can find your property on a succession of maps, you can see how it changed over time. The fire insurance maps were updated somewhat irregularly, based upon the likelihood that enough had changed to make possible the sale of updated maps. However, when found, they can offer proof of the existence of your home and represent a unique snapshot of the community. Looking at maps can provide you with a unique perspective about the property you are researching, and can often offer new leads in your search for who lived in your home. Whenever you are at a library, government center or historical society, ask about the maps and atlases that are held in their collections.

Mobility satellite navigation systems are computerised maps with route-planning and advice facilities which monitor the users position with the help of satellites.
It is a well known fact that maps do not require language skills. An illiterate will most likely be able to interpret a map but not written directions. Still most of the travel and real estate websites on the net do not use maps. I strongly believe that all website must have a small outline map of the city where the business is located and may be of the country as well. Business map, in their very basic format, have the outline or the boundary of the city. The location of the business can be shown as a colored dot or the business name or your logo can also be shown instead of a dot. A catchy phrase at the bottom or middle of the map can summarize your business. The inset of such a city map can have the country map with basic demarcations of the state or province boundaries and your city shown prominently.
