The GPS Database Most of the more costly GPS units come with an integrated GPS database program. The GPS database contains permanent waypoints that help the system recognize your location and guide your travels. A GPS system used during flights, for example, would usually have a GPS database with various airports and other navigational tools that aid in tracking their position. With these waypoints already programmed into the database, you can simply choose your destination and map your route without additional typing or searching. Most GPS mapping devices include a basic GPS database with cities and towns, major streets, and some side roads. Some GPS units have an empty database that the user must create. Global positioning systems first came into use during the 1960s and there are currently at least 24 GPS satellites in orbit. These advancements in GPS technology led to GPS mapping, making it easy to map practically any location. GIC GPS mapping software allows instant access to images of practically any location. Sometimes the resolution and clarity of the satellite image is so good, you can see cars and trees in the image.

Interactive map making software usually supports custom definable regions, areas and location points. Users can select pre-designed flash map templates, and easily change color settings of countries or counties, and pinpoint locations on the map by using pushpin buttons or icons. A hover over tooltip box can be displayed with your own text, images, with links to another web page, PDF documents, or sites on the World Wide Web. As the main purpose of these maps are for navigation or data representation purpose, geographical details such as highways, buildings, rivers are not always necessary, which makes the map cleaner and easier to navigate by visitors. With few click-through on the national, state or county map, visitors can quickly find information or be redirected to specific page about a particular location on the map image.

Unlimited uses for copywriters and others... Mind mapping is related to techniques such as concept mapping, idea mapping and Ishikawa diagrams. The term mind mapping was coined by British writer Tony Buzan and consists of creating branching diagrams that use lines, words, colour and images to capture information around a central idea. Like all great ideas, mind mapping is as simple and accessible as a pencil and an old envelope. Although Buzan claims the origination of the term mind map, the use of image-centered radial graphical organization methods goes back centuries. And with computers it was inevitable that mind mapping would reach our monitors as mind mapping software such as the excellent open source Freemind.

It is estimated that almost $800 billion will be spent on travel and tourism in 2011 and nearly two billion business and leisure trips will be made in the United States alone. How will these travelers discover where to stay, eat, shop and play? How will they learn about the businesses in your town? When I travel or visit a new place I look for fun and informative maps to help me plan my trip before I go. I want to learn a little about the area, find places to stay, and know what to expect when I get there. Once I arrive at my destination I need an easy way to find nearby attractions, restaurants and other businesses. Getting a sense of the neighborhood and some background information makes my visit more enjoyable. An interactive map can display photos, videos and descriptions of hotels, points of interest, historic sites, shopping areas or museums, and you can click right from the map to advertiser web sites to book accommodations or get more details. 3. Hold the map up to the light to look at the paper. Most maps made before the 1820s were made on hand-made paper. This paper was made by artisans who used a wire mesh to hold up the paper pulp. This wire mesh leaves a visible grid called "chain links" that are visible against a strong light source. Paper makers often had a watermark to identify themselves that is sometimes visible on bigger maps. If you dont have chain links on a map dated from the 1820s or earlier, then you have a map reproduction. 4. The majority of antique maps were taken out of old atlases, because of this there is often a fold in the middle of a map. This fold is where the map was bound in the book. Also atlas maps are worn from use at the corners, especially the right hand top or bottom corners. This is where most people would flip the pages. If your map doesnt have a center fold or looks too new, then it probably is.

The key is knowledge, so you will need to learn as much as you can about the individual maps you are hunting for. I suggest you choose a subject of cartography or a historical period you may interested in learning about. Consider maps made during the American civil war, maps of the Republic of Texas, maps of Scotland if you are of Scottish ancestry or maps of Rome if you went there on honeymoon. For example, your adoptive child is from China then you can concentrate on maps of China. The options are limitless. The idea is that within each field there will be a few fairly rare and desirable maps that can fetch some good money when sold at auction. When you have become acquainted with the current sale price of your selection of maps you will need to consider condition and editions. By this I mean a specific edition, of a specific year for a map in good condition with no tears, water stains, major repairs and has good color. By the time you have done the things described above you will have a fair amount of knowledge about the world of antique maps. You will now be starting your hunt. In your hunt you should go to all the consignment shops and thrift stores in your area. Visit antique stores and old book stores and ask to see if they have old maps. By doing this you will get to handle antique maps and get a feel for them.
