A world wall map can have a range of benefits, from the cultural and social to the geographical and educational. This article presents an overview of the cultural and social impacts that maps have on people. Childs Play Children love to use their imagination and play games where they pretend to be someone or something. Children can use world maps to pretend they live in another country and imagine what life would be like in a different continent, with a different climate and different neighbouring countries. It helps children to appreciate and understand that life may be very different in other countries to what they are familiar with. Countries near the equator will be hotter and there will need to be adaptations in living conditions. By looking at a world map, adults too can let their imagination run wild. Whether for planning a trip or a holiday or simply looking at the distance between countries, a wall-map of the world is key for sparking the imagination.
One of the tricky questions that appear when you are looking to organize a trip is to know which kind of maps you should get in order to make it easy to move around through your destination. There are many options out there, but my general recommendation is that simplicity must win. Lets take a look at how we should select the best travel maps. First of all, to select the best travel maps you need to know which kind of trip you are planning to do. What I mean is not just the length of the trip or the number of stars your hotel has. What you really need to know if you are going to be staying in a single city, if you are going around a single country, or if you are visiting a whole continent, like it could be the case of a trip to Europe.
This conveys to the visitor a sense of belonging, a sense of direction, that your business is located in the West or East or North or South. In all probability he will remember the general location and what your business ddeals with, better than the words of the address. We humans have a way with pictures. Now the question comes, how to get the map and then how to edit it as suited to your requirements. There are many mapping sites which provide you with outline maps at low costs. You can visit them and buy these fully editable maps and feed your specific information and use it in your website. But what you need is a small country outline map, why pay $50 or more to an online mapping site for it. Yes you are right. A country outline map should be available for $20 or may be $10 or even free. So how do you create a free map for your site. Just go over to Google Earth or Google Map, display your countrys full extent, save the screen as image. Now use Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand to vectorise the outline. You got your vector country outline map. Add the relevant information and use it the way you want. All simple maps can be easily created by this method but for big and complicated maps you need cartographers or map makers. All maps can not be produced by just drawing lines, you need GIS exports, some re-specifications, may be some adjustments and a pleasing design which conforms to the use of the map. No wonder, map making is a lovely amalgamation of art and science.

Map projections are classified based on: Distortion characteristics: Some projections often need to show a particular area or its relative size accurately for distributions or other phenomena. These are called equivalent or an equal area projection. The Lambert Azimuthal projection that maps a sphere to a disk, and accurately shows all regions of the sphere is an example of this category. However, this equal area projection fails to represent angles with accuracy. The Albers projection is another instance of equal area map projection that utilizes two standard parallels. Despite no preservation of scale and shape, the distortion in this case is found to be minimal between the standard parallels.
Fire Insurance Maps During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, fire insurance maps were periodically drawn up for cities and towns in the United States. These maps were commissioned by insurance companies in order to more accurately calculate fire risk, depicting the layout of the town and showing each existing building. The maps offer a great deal of information, and can show the outline of the building, the building material, the number of stories, doors, windows and chimneys, the address and lot lines, street widths, water pipes, hydrants and cisterns. The Sanborn Company was the largest, but not the only, fire insurance mapping firm. The Sanborn Company was founded in 1867, and created fire insurance maps from 1867 until 1969.
