The walk location is decided, you know how long you want to be out for and youve brushed up on your map reading skills. Its time to get a map and plot the route. In the UK this means using an Ordnance Survey map which shows all the footpaths, features and topographic detail you will need to complete any forray into the countryside safely and successfully. There is not just one Ordnance Survey map for each area however but a choice of different series of maps, all showing different levels of detail, scales or usages. So how do you select the right Ordnance Survey map for your walk? Here are a few pointers to help you choose: Select the correct map for your walk: You have two main choices of paper map - the Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer or the Ordnance (OS) Landranger. Other maps are available such as street atlases, historical or specialised activity maps but for hiking or walking you will need one of the above in order to provide enough detail to navigate from.
Electronic maps, From the last quarter of the 20th century, the indispensable tool of the cartographer has been the computer. Much of cartography, especially at the data-gathering survey level, has been subsumed by Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The functionality of maps has been greatly advanced by technology simplifying the superimposition of spatially located variables onto existing geographical maps. Interactive, computerised maps are commercially available, allowing users to zoom in or zoom out (respectively meaning to increase or decrease the scale), sometimes by replacing one map with another of different scale, centred where possible on the same point. Mobility satellite navigation systems are computerised maps with route-planning and advice facilities which monitor the users position with the help of satellites.
You will see a lot more of the city of Barcelona if you travel by bus. The buses operate regular services in well maintained, clean and air conditioned vehicles. It is also much easier to get around by bus than trying to drive a car around the city centre. The main bus station in Barcelona is Estació del Nord which is located near the Arc de Triomf metro station. You can get there via subway: L1, Arc de Triomf from the metro, on bus number 54 or Renfe Cercanias trains 1,3 and 4. You can travel on the bus from Barcelona to a number of places in Spain and normally no pre-booking is required. The long distance buses operate out of Barcelona Nord bus station: Barcelona-San Andrés, Avenida Meridiania, 416 and Barcelona-Sants, Calle Viriato. Alsa are Spains leading coach and bus company.
These arent like those maps you get at the gas station when you need to get from Topeka to Las Vegas. They offer more than just the highways and byways of the roads. Instead, a good atlas will give you the important information in addition to the means to travel from one place to another. Many a traveler has their travel map pinned up on the wall with many brightly colored pins sticking in the destinations they have visited. Sometimes the pins are coded in a way that says something like "Red is the places I have been, Blue is the places I have lived, and Yellow is the places I want to go someday." Of course the color scheme is different depending on what you like or want to say about the map on your wall.
Though a globe model of the earth is the most common version of the earths surface, it would often create a lot of confusions to combine the political and physical maps together. Thats why maps are created for different purposes, which use map projection to depict the earths surface on a plane using a wide variety of scales. Digital maps also use map projections to present data on a computer screen. Different maps use different map projections based on what purpose the map will serve and the scale thats suitable for the purpose. For example, a type of map projection may show severe distortions while mapping the whole country, but may serve as an excellent choice for a countys detailed map that aims to cover a large area. The type of map projections also influences some of the design elements of a map. While some are suitable for small regions, some other projections are good for mapping areas with a huge north-south or east-west extent, or to cover all countries of the world.
