The second thing selecting the best travel maps is to know the mean of transport you are going to use in case you are on an intercity trip or visiting many countries. Once youve got this information planned, it is the time to take the decision according to it. If you are planning to visit a single city, the best you can do is to get nothing at all. Im not speaking about going there with no information but what I really mean is that any city has very good maps you can take for free in any tourism office, hotel or simply at the airport or the railway station where you arrive. These maps are already thought for you, youll see the main streets, touristic attractions, etc. Instead, it is indeed important to look for the best travel maps if you are going to run across many cities.
Conformal projection: These projections maintain angular relationships and show accurate shapes while covering small areas. Such maps are useful for navigational or meteorological purposes where angular relationships are important. Equidistant projection: Maps that maintain accurate distances along given lines or from the center of the projection are based on this principle of equidistant projection. Such maps are used for navigation and for radio and seismic mapping. The Equirectangular projection and the Equidistant Conic projection are two examples of this category. Azimuthal (or zenithal) projection: A projection that maintains accurate angular relationships and directions from a given central point use this projection. Maps for aeronautical purposes use this principle. The Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection and the Gnomonic projection are examples of how azimuthal projection is used for map making.
Since the early days of humanity, people have created maps. At the beginning very simple, and later more and more complex. A map is a simplified depiction of a space which highlights relations between components (objects, regions) of that space. Most usually a map is a two-dimensional, geometrically accurate representation of a three-dimensional space; e.g., a geographical map. More generally, maps can be devised to represent any local property of the world or part of it, or any other space, such as the brain. Map-making dates back to the Stone Age and appears to predate written language by several millennia. One of the oldest surviving maps is painted on a wall of the Catal Huyuk settlement in south-central Anatolia (now Turkey); it dates from about 6200 BC. One who makes maps professionally or privately is called a cartographer.
Gone are the days when you need a compass to find your way. Gone are the days when you need to hold a map on your hand to know where you are going. Today, all you need before you leave is go check online maps that feature satellite views, driving directions, traffic report, and even see what the streets will look like on your way. Yes! Thats how advanced the web is now. Several advanced maps are available online, and known among them are Yahoo! Maps, Live Search Maps, Google Maps, and Mapquest. These online maps, share a lot of features, and like other products there will be an online map that will stand out for it has a feature not available on the rest. The ordinary street map we get used to are available on all these online maps. Oh, dont know what ordinary map I am referring to? It is the map that has full of different lines, symbols, and are in colors. You can usually buy one from a store. But since this street map is found online, the map can be customized with places you are looking for.
For the cities themselves you can just rely on the maps mentioned before, but when it comes go move from one to the other, its a good idea to get small but detailed maps where you can find your route. Of course, if you travel by train, an inter-rail map would be the best. If you go by road, a good idea is to avoid buying any maps and use the Google Earths function that allows you to write two cities and the program finds with detail the best route possible. Print out the screen and the indications or copy it in a paper and theyll be great value. Finally, if you are going on a trip that includes many countries, you can find the best travel maps by using the system mentioned above for road travel. Instead, for rail travel I would encourage you to get one single map for every country as maps for a whole continent will be far less the detail grade you expect them to be. If you are going to Europe, a good idea is to get also the timetables for all European departures getting the Eurail timetable that gets published every year. In any case, when you are looking to select one map or another, the best deal will always be the most simple one. A map loaded with data and details of everything is confusing and will get you tired. When looking for the best travel maps you need to find in the map only what is interesting you and nothing else.
Some possible applications using interactive maps on websites including: Retail Shops / Branches Locator: A web-based interactive flash map can help your customers to find the nearest retail shop or branch location in few mouse clicks. For example, you can use an interactive map of United States on your website, with pushpin buttons to pinpoint all your retail shops, hotels or any other type of facilities. Your visitors can make selection simply by clicking on a pushpin button, and then he can see the list of options available including address and contact details. Interactive Real Estate Map: A real estate website can use interactive flash maps to display available properties on state, county or city maps. Push pins of different colors and shapes can be used to pinpoint residential properties, commercial properties, resorts, apartments, corporate offices, and more. Hover over effects can be included which can provide additional pop-up information about a particular property.
