In the course of researching an old building, your home or an ancestors house, maps can provide some additional and interesting information about the building and its neighborhood. They show details in ways not examined by other sources, and can often provide leads for further exploration. Atlases and Maps Atlases and maps provide a visual history of an area. While a map is usually just one sheet of paper, an atlas is generally a bound collection of maps, charts, plates or tables. These maps often show the location of roads and other landmarks that may no longer exist. You might find these at city hall, county courthouses or local libraries or archives.
Maps are so ubiquitous that we forget that we use maps on daily basis. The signage, the road mile stones, the directions that ask are basically maps in the making. Yes we make maps in our minds. Once you put these on paper or on electronic media, these become hard copy or soft copy maps. Maps basically fall in two categories, the raster and the vector maps. Raster maps are images of paper maps, it can be said to be similar to photographs. Can you edit them, yes but very difficult to control each aspect of raster maps layout and designs. Mind mapping: a powerful brainstorming tool Whether youre a busy executive or a copywriter like me, mind mapping leads to a flow of thoughts. And by creating blank branches, youre forced to satisfy the brains desire for Gestalt, or wholeness, to find answers and make new associations. Where traditional note taking works in a constrained, linear way, mind mapping exploits the brains tendency to scan the whole field of information before it. Advantages of mind mapping for copywriters? So often, the simplest ideas and tools are the most powerful. For my work as a copywriter, Ive used mind mapping daily to plan articles, brochure content and website copy as well as for all manner of thinking and brainstorming purposes. Naturally, this article was planned using mind mapping.
