This article, a prequel to my forthcoming 101 Map Uses, offers 10 productive ways businesses can use wall maps. Too often, business professionals equate maps with the online digital variety that provide directions, the nearest Home Depot, and homes for sale, all from the comfort of a computer, PDA, or cell phone. Yet, millions of businesses use printed wall maps daily. Fortune 500 companies insist on using high quality printed maps in their day-to-day operations because there is simply no replacement for maps. While the digital map has its own uses, a well-designed printed map is by no means old school. To the contrary, wall maps keep up with the modern needs of business and are in high demand. Wall maps serve a multitude of purposes, the least of which is decorative eye candy, although this is a distinct use that has more value than you may think. Well get to that in a minute. Printed maps are handled in the office from everyone from the CEO, sales manager, executive assistant, accountant, and truck driver. This article is less for the professionals who already use maps, but for those who want to learn what the Fortune 500 know.
In addition to the traditional ways of getting maps, another source that has become very popular, are on the internet maps. Using a selection of sites, all one needs to do is type in the beginning point and the end point and a atlas in the same way as driving directions can be printed up. This can be very valuable to anyone who is traveling last minutes and does not have the time to find maps other ways. If you are intending to rent a car, talk to the renting a car agency. They too can be very helpful in getting travel maps for practically any destination, or general guidelines. If the trip involves traveling by plane, nearly any gift shop in every airport has some type of travel map available.
In the course of researching an old building, your home or an ancestors house, maps can provide some additional and interesting information about the building and its neighborhood. They show details in ways not examined by other sources, and can often provide leads for further exploration. Atlases and Maps Atlases and maps provide a visual history of an area. While a map is usually just one sheet of paper, an atlas is generally a bound collection of maps, charts, plates or tables. Historical city and county maps and atlases may show your home on them, and perhaps even list the owners name as well. These maps often show the location of roads and other landmarks that may no longer exist. You might find these at city hall, county courthouses or local libraries or archives.
Conformal projection: These projections maintain angular relationships and show accurate shapes while covering small areas. Such maps are useful for navigational or meteorological purposes where angular relationships are important. Equidistant projection: Maps that maintain accurate distances along given lines or from the center of the projection are based on this principle of equidistant projection. Such maps are used for navigation and for radio and seismic mapping. The Equirectangular projection and the Equidistant Conic projection are two examples of this category. Azimuthal (or zenithal) projection: A projection that maintains accurate angular relationships and directions from a given central point use this projection. Maps for aeronautical purposes use this principle. The Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection and the Gnomonic projection are examples of how azimuthal projection is used for map making.
The OS Explorer map series is the most popular choice and an essential for longer or more complex walks or those going off the beaten track. It is highly detailed and shows all rights of way, footpaths, landscape and interest features and contours. Every house, public facility or point of interest is covered giving you all the tools you need to locate yourself as well as finding that nearest pub for a drink after a hard days walking! The scale is 1:25000 - that is 1cm on the map equates to 250m on the ground (4cm per km or 2 1/2 inches to a mile) The OS Landranger map series covers a wider area with a scale of 1:50000 (thats 1cm on the map to every 500m on the ground, 2cm per km or 1 1/4 inches to the mile). This makes it handy for planning a day out over a broader area and for getting a good picture of where you are going and it shows the main footpaths and rights of way as well as tourist information and points of interest. However it doesnt contain as much detail as the OS Explorer range and if you are going off into the wilds you will need the detail of the Explorer map to navigate with confidence.
Very popular antique maps are fetching very high prices at the auction block, because of this many forgeries have appeared as well as numerous copies of these maps. Map reproductions are not worth anything regardless of what the seller tells you. We will give you a few tips to distinguish a fake antique map from a real antique map. First let us talk about copies, forgeries and reproductions of antique maps. Cartographers have copied each others maps for centuries and have improved on them as well. These old maps can be valuable since they were done when the information on them was valid and useful. They are genuine historical documents. However, recent copies of old maps that depict geographical information from centuries past are made with the intent of offering decoration and sometimes historical insight to their buyers. The value of these map reproductions is often marketed to unknowing customers by claiming that the copy is of a rare map or that is was made using some fancy printing technique. The truth is that a copy of a rare map is not rare, it is the original map that is rare. The copy is worthless and the same goes for the fancy printing.
