The OS Explorer map series is the most popular choice and an essential for longer or more complex walks or those going off the beaten track. It is highly detailed and shows all rights of way, footpaths, landscape and interest features and contours. Every house, public facility or point of interest is covered giving you all the tools you need to locate yourself as well as finding that nearest pub for a drink after a hard days walking! The scale is 1:25000 - that is 1cm on the map equates to 250m on the ground (4cm per km or 2 1/2 inches to a mile) The OS Landranger map series covers a wider area with a scale of 1:50000 (thats 1cm on the map to every 500m on the ground, 2cm per km or 1 1/4 inches to the mile). This makes it handy for planning a day out over a broader area and for getting a good picture of where you are going and it shows the main footpaths and rights of way as well as tourist information and points of interest. However it doesnt contain as much detail as the OS Explorer range and if you are going off into the wilds you will need the detail of the Explorer map to navigate with confidence.
There are some maps that combine all the above mentioned principles or use a compromise between them to depict the world and countries. For example, Robinson projection that showed the entire world at a glance can be said to be a compromise between the equal-area and conformal map projection. The objective behind its creation was to show the entire globe as a flat image. However, the Robinson projection was replaced later by the more modified version called the Winkel tripel projection, which is considered to be a blend of the azimuthal Aitoff projection and the equirectangular projection. At present, digital maps use either one or more than one of these aforesaid map projection types to create interactive maps that not only show the data in a much reliable way but also let the users utilize the maps to get additional information based on add-on clickable icons, pushpins, tool tip or mouse over info boxes etc. If you still havent enjoyed the use of digital flash maps with several user friendly, interactive features, its time to shift from the traditional paper maps to see the sales graphs soar.
Fire Insurance Maps During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, fire insurance maps were periodically drawn up for cities and towns in the United States. These maps were commissioned by insurance companies in order to more accurately calculate fire risk, depicting the layout of the town and showing each existing building. The maps offer a great deal of information, and can show the outline of the building, the building material, the number of stories, doors, windows and chimneys, the address and lot lines, street widths, water pipes, hydrants and cisterns. The Sanborn Company was the largest, but not the only, fire insurance mapping firm. The Sanborn Company was founded in 1867, and created fire insurance maps from 1867 until 1969.
Many but not all maps are drawn to a scale, allowing the reader to infer the actual sizes of, and distances between, depicted objects. A larger scale shows more detail, thus requiring a larger map to show the same area. For example, maps designed for the hiker are often scaled at the ratio 1:24,000, meaning that 1 of any unit of measurement on the map corresponds to 24,000 of that same unit in reality; while maps designed for the motorist are often scaled at 1:250,000. Maps which use some quality other than physical area to determine relative size are called cartograms. A famous example of a map without scale is the London Underground map, which best fulfils its purpose by being less physically accurate and more visually communicative to the hurried glance of the commuter. This is not a cartogram (since there is no consistent measure of distance) but a topological map that also depicts approximate bearings. The simple maps shown on some directional road signs are further examples of this kind.
3. Hold the map up to the light to look at the paper. Most maps made before the 1820s were made on hand-made paper. This paper was made by artisans who used a wire mesh to hold up the paper pulp. This wire mesh leaves a visible grid called "chain links" that are visible against a strong light source. Paper makers often had a watermark to identify themselves that is sometimes visible on bigger maps. If you dont have chain links on a map dated from the 1820s or earlier, then you have a map reproduction. 4. The majority of antique maps were taken out of old atlases, because of this there is often a fold in the middle of a map. This fold is where the map was bound in the book. Also atlas maps are worn from use at the corners, especially the right hand top or bottom corners. This is where most people would flip the pages. If your map doesnt have a center fold or looks too new, then it probably is.
Interactive map making software usually supports custom definable regions, areas and location points. Users can select pre-designed flash map templates, and easily change color settings of countries or counties, and pinpoint locations on the map by using pushpin buttons or icons. A hover over tooltip box can be displayed with your own text, images, with links to another web page, PDF documents, or sites on the World Wide Web. As the main purpose of these maps are for navigation or data representation purpose, geographical details such as highways, buildings, rivers are not always necessary, which makes the map cleaner and easier to navigate by visitors. With few click-through on the national, state or county map, visitors can quickly find information or be redirected to specific page about a particular location on the map image.
