The use of different learning styles within the classroom has long been a core teaching strategy, and with the exam season upon us again, the need to find effective methods which allow learners to condense key information into memorable chunks becomes even more pressing. Keywords are a useful starting point, but adding structure to these is important if disparate pieces of information are to be linked into a coherent story. This is where visual mapping can play a key role. Although most people viewing a mind map or concept map will initially consider the words themselves to have the most importance, positioning of these words within the diagrams also holds key information. In mind maps, the overarching idea of the diagram will be found at the centre, with topics of reducing levels of importance radiating out from this until the detail resides at the edges. Related wedges may be shown by the use of different colours, and pictures and other aide memoire are also recommended to bring the creative mind into play. Links, in the form of simple lines, usually show a number of branching pathways radiating out from the centre, giving a spider web structure to the final map.
Cartographers use a system called projection to depict the three-dimensional data of the surface of the Earth to a two-dimensional presentation. The Mercator Projection is the most popular projection for the map of the world. In the aeronautical realm, they use conical projections. With the galloping strides in the information technology, cartography has attained greater sophistication. Geographic Information System (GIS) has made it more scientific, accurate and adaptive to fluctuations in various fronts. Labeling is the system of specifying geographic features like cities, lakes, rivers, etc. in a map. For cartographers, labeling is difficult with the increase in density. Maps are created for the world, the continents, the countries, the provinces or states, smaller units like districts, cities, towns, etc.
Maps of places give details as to the geographic location, physical characteristics, climate profile, vegetative structure, flora and fauna, soil structure, latitude and longitude, etc. Over the years, these maps were used in schools and colleges, offices and in houses for the purpose of education and/or reference. These maps used to be in paper-printed two-dimensional formats. Now three-dimensional, interactive or dynamic maps represent more accurate and up-to-date information. The art and science of map-making is called cartography. Maps are created representing political, geographical and other particular aspects. Most of the maps are drawn on a scale, say 1: 10,000, meaning that one unit of measurement on the map represents 10,000 units on the land. Maps depicting land areas are called political maps or physical maps. Political maps show land boundaries or territorial boarders between states and provinces, say those between India and China or Maharashtra and Gujarat. Physical maps depict geographical features such as terrain structure, mountains, deserts, plateaus, rivers, land under use, etc.
There are many potential applications for an interactive US map. Many government websites use United States maps of counties to show census data (e.g. highest-income counties), geography of recession, employment gains or losses by county, map of bank failures, election results etc. Business websites use interactive maps to show branch offices, sales figures by states, driving directions, traveling route maps, or as store locator, property finder, to improve the easiness of website navigation. With an interactive U.S. map showing all states and counties, visitors can firstly click on a state (e.g. New York, Florida) from the map, see a map with counties within that state. Visitors can then simply roll the mouse cursor over a county on the map and the information about that county will show in a pop up box instantly, with text, images and hyperlinks. Then the visitor can click the links in the tool tip to get further information or redirected to a corresponding page.
Mapmakers and GPS manufacturers all have their own system of creating maps, but most maps begin with the placement of governmental sites, like fire and police stations, schools, and similar community landmarks. Aerial images and satellite photos are then layered into the basic map, along with any important additions that may be needed, to display the GPS map seen on the device. Some GPS mapping devices can produce immediate graphics of your location and surroundings, making it possible to view a real-time map that changes as your location changes. This type of GPS map is great in emergency situations.The features of GPS maps vary. Most software includes maps of cities, along with the major highways. These maps may also include city level streets, rivers and waterways, and even less traveled side roads. Many GPS mapping systems include features that make it possible to obtain maps from your computer, making it easy and convenient to travel to any area.
